What is bog oak?

Bog oak — also called bogwood — is oak that fell into peat bogs and riverbeds thousands of years ago and never decayed. Sealed away from oxygen, the wood slowly absorbs minerals from the water around it; over centuries this hardens and darkens the timber, turning it from familiar brown oak into something closer to stone — denser, darker, and streaked with colour that no living tree can produce. It cannot be farmed, planted or replenished. Every piece that exists was laid down before recorded history, and when it is gone, it is gone.

Why is every bathtub different?

Because the earth does not repeat itself. Each recovered trunk has spent a different number of centuries — sometimes millennia — underground, and its age decides everything: the depth of the colour, the mineral veining, the figure of the grain. One commission may be handcrafted from wood a thousand years old, the next from timber that could possibly predate the pyramids.
