The Exercise Bike That Doesn’t Look Like Gym Equipment

Most exercise bikes are designed to be hidden. They arrive in black steel, they announce their function from across the room, and the interior has to absorb them. Ciclotte, made in Italy, works from the opposite premise — a design object in its own right, carrying the ride quality a serious cyclist expects.

What can actually be customised on a Ciclotte bike?

Two things, independently of each other: how it looks and how it performs.

The visible surfaces — the frame, the gearbox case, the touch points — can be specified in a range of materials and finishes. Separately, the training set-up can be configured — from the LED screen on the bike itself up to a VR headset and smart mirror specified alongside it. A client who wants walnut and nothing else can have that. So can one who wants marble and a smart mirror. The two decisions are not bundled.

Which materials and finishes are available?

For a bespoke commission: hand-polished marble, tempered glass, brushed metals and a full range of colours. The point of that list is not luxury for its own sake — it is that the bike can be matched to the room it will live in, so it reads as furniture rather than as gym equipment.

The marble types are specified by name: Green Marble of the Alps, White Carrara, Yellow Travertine Classic, Red Travertine and Black Portoro. On the marble version the stone forms the structural frame itself, which is why the piece weighs what it does. In the carbon finishes the range runs from bare black carbon fibre through red, green, white, grey, blue, yellow and orange.

Underneath any finish the engineering is constant. The wheel — the form the entire design turns on — is made entirely from carbon fibre, the material of racing cars, over a frame that combines carbon fibre with steel for rigidity. Ciclotte drive it with an electromagnetic resistance system and a turn-multiplier transmission.

The catalogue models each make a different material argument. The Carbon leaves that construction on show, finishing the wheel in bare carbon rather than dressing it. The Nohrd dresses the gearbox case in solid wood, offered in oak, beech, cherry and walnut across six versions and several treatments. The One Pirelli, a limited edition created with Pirelli, draws its frame from a single high-tech calendered tube and finishes it in the colours of a racing tyre, with handles wrapped in an exclusive rubber coating carrying the all-over Pirelli logo.

What technology can be specified with it?

On a bespoke commission, a VR headset, a smart mirror and the client’s own training and coaching apps are specified alongside the bike — agreed as part of the commission and configured to how the client actually trains, rather than assembled piecemeal afterwards.

The catalogue models carry a more conventional set. Connectivity runs across the range — Zwift and Kinomap turn a session into a route or a race on any of the bikes. What separates the models is the hardware: the One Pirelli and the Nohrd both carry a transmission developed with NOHRD™, a new LED screen and the Nohrd Connect App, while the Carbon makes its case through ergonomics rather than electronics — a geometry lifted from the road, where the triangle of handles, pedals and seat, the narrow gap between the pedals and the lateral flex of the frame together reproduce the feel of riding on asphalt.

Do you have to start from scratch?

No — and for most projects that would be the wrong instinct. The three catalogue bikes are finished designs, not starting points to be improved on, and each already answers a different brief: carbon fibre for interiors that want the object to read as sculpture, wood for rooms built around natural materials, motorsport for spaces where the reference is understood at a glance.

A bespoke commission makes sense when none of the three fits the room, or when the technology has to be specified around a particular way of training. That is the point at which the material and the configuration are both opened up.
